5 Examples of Beautiful Before and After Photo Restorations

People love a good “before and after.” Whether you are drawn to the drama in the “after” reveal, enjoy the creative transformation process, or something else, there’s no denying that before and after projects — home, beauty, products, etc. — are fascinating.

For us, it’s all about the challenge.

It is rewarding to restore a photo that someone deems impossible. In order to succeed at photo restoration, you have to understand the product before you, and that isn’t always straightforward. You have to know how the piece was made, what caused the photo damage, and what you can/cannot do when trying to restore it. We take great pride in the final product and are always inspired by how the “after” reveal moves people.

Here are a few fun before and after photo restorations:

Moisture gets trapped behind the glass and causes the photo emulsion to turn gelatinous. When it dries, it adheres to the glass. In the restoration, we brightened the photo and were able to remove all of the photo damage.

Fortunately, we had all of the major pieces and could reconstruct the photo through restoration. We love how you can see the details in her dress and jewelry.

This level of crazing comes from being handled too much, and the photo had faded over time. You can see the adhesive that stuck to the image from the photo corners. Mary Lou restored the image and used multiple methods to bring back the color.

The photo was silvering, had a stain from water damage, lost pieces of the emulsion, and had breakage from being brittle. With this restoration, we not only want to restore what was missing, but bring back the details in her dress and flowers. It’s a romantic wedding image, and it was a rewarding restoration.

Our client had copies of original hand colored fibre prints, and the copies had suffered damage over time. Our restoration brought these photos full circle. The photos were restored by hand, and the prints are archival fibre prints, just like what the originals would have been. We then framed the images with a blush mat, french line, and champagne frame. The end result is soft and beautiful.

Each of these projects had their own challenges, but that is what makes photo restoration so satisfying. It’s fun to watch the transformation process and see the “after” reveal on television, but it is so much more special to be able to give that to our clients.
